Usually made up of low surface tension polymers that spread quickly when used as spray applications, defoaming agents may contain mineral oil, mineral oil-free versions or even added hydrophobic solids like silica fortification.

Defoamers are widely utilized in paints, coatings and inks; oftentimes they can be applied using roller, brush, pad & dip applications as well as curtain coat and spray applications.

Defoaming Characteristics

Defoaming and antifoaming agent are chemical processing aids designed to minimize or prevent foam formation in industrial process liquids. They tend to be insoluble within their target medium, possess surface-active characteristics that destabilize foam lamellae, leading to burst air bubbles or their breakdown.

Defoamers typically consist of hydrophobized silica suspended in silicone fluid. At low concentrations, these chemically inert defoamers remain stable while being capable of spreading over a foamed medium without disrupting or altering its structure – which makes them suitable for industrial applications involving foam formation.

Oil based defoamer such as silica and composite defoamers also exist on granular carriers, and are tested using Ross-Miles or shake flask methods, to assess knockdown (defoaming speed) and persistence (long-lasting effect). Other tests, such as circulation foam measurement or gloss measurement may be employed to gauge their efficacy for particular end uses.

Defoaming Methods

Foam is an inherently diverse material with multiple characteristics that influence its properties, including density, cell structure (open or closed-cell), mechanical strength, thermal insulation properties and surface appearance. Foam’s chemical makeup plays an integral part in shaping its characteristics as it interacts with equipment, materials and liquids present within a system.

Defoamers are used to reduce existing foam and inhibit its formation in industrial process liquids. To be effective, defoamers must be compatible with their system and be capable of dispersing quickly across the gas-liquid interface. Their concentration, addition method and mixing forces all contribute to its effectiveness.

Physical methods exist for eliminating foam that involve installing baffles, filters, mechanical stirring, static electricity, freezing, heating, steam, radiation, high-speed centrifugation pressurization decompression instantaneous discharge or ultrasound (acoustic liquid control). Unfortunately these techniques can be labor intensive, require considerable space, produce hazardous byproducts or create potentially corrosive byproducts that could compromise health and safety.

Defoaming Effects

Defoaming agents must quickly and evenly penetrate foamy liquid in order to be effective, so industry experts have developed different chemistries as defoaming agents with various advantages and disadvantages.

Foam stabilizers (defoamers) bind to the air-liquid interface and disrupt foam lamellae, prompting bubbles entrapped within them to burst and surface foam to dissipate. They’re often insoluble within their environment – typically composed of oils, waxes or polymers with silicon structures – making them suitable for use on many kinds of liquid foamy environments.

Defoamer with silicone structures are used in high-performance coatings to increase anti-ageing, corrosion protection and chemical resistance properties, as well as providing better adhesion between coating and substrate.

Pigmented architectural applications often use various binder systems, from low PVC dispersions to aqueous-based clear solutions, with roller application being particularly vulnerable to foam formation, necessitating an effective defoamer. Foaming also often occurs during spray applications due to shear forces creating rapid upward flow of air trapped between their shear forces causing rapid air intake rates that require constant defoamers for spray applications.

Kinds Of Defoaming Agents

There is a wide selection of defoaming agents on the market to suit every application, making it important to select the appropriate product.

Water based defoamer contain various oils and waxes mixed into a water base solution, typically mineral or vegetable oils and EBS waxes; paraffin waxes; fatty alcohol waxes and ester waxes may also be included to provide maximum coverage against surface foaming while also dispensing air from within entrained foam particles. They’re great at both knocking down surface foam as well as discharging trapped air from within surface foam layers.

Silicone antifoam are an innovative class of defoamers made up of hydrophobized silica which works to lower entry barriers to foam bubbles and puncture them. Their main characteristics are chemical inertness, potency even at low concentrations and ability to spread throughout a foam film, while being stable under high shear and boiling conditions. Crucible offers a broad selection of reliable antifoams suitable for paint/coating formulations as well as cleaning/janitorial products.

What is a Defoaming Agent?
